The Diocese of León was awarded the Gold Medal of the City by the municipal corporation, recognized for its long-standing commitment to community care and heritage protection. The ceremony took place on October 14, where the bishop received the distinction from the city mayor, representing a unanimous decision by the municipal council made on June 31. The bishop expressed heartfelt gratitude for the acknowledgment, highlighting the significance of the unanimous backing from all political groups, which adds unique value to the medal.

During the ceremony held at the Episcopal Palace, the bishop emphasized that the medal represents a collective history and community, recognizing the contributions of numerous individuals over the centuries. He pointed out that the medal also honors the current clergy, lay members, and volunteers committed to serving those in need, particularly the marginalized and suffering in society. This commitment is especially evident in the charitable work of the Diocese and the extensive network of volunteers supporting families facing hardships.

The event saw the presence of the emeritus bishop, members of the diocesan curia, and a wide institutional representation from León's society. Both the bishop and the mayor acknowledged the deep historical ties between the Diocese and the City, dating back to the third century, and the importance of preserving the rich artistic and historical heritage, which includes over a thousand temples and buildings across the diocesan territory.

Looking towards the future, the bishop asserted that the medal serves as motivation to continue serving the people of León. He stressed the necessity of supporting those experiencing suffering and loneliness, as well as addressing issues related to education, housing, and respect for human dignity. He called for a collaborative effort to uphold values of respect, dialogue, justice, equality, and peace, framing these as essential for the common good.

In concluding his speech, the bishop reiterated the Diocese's desire to walk alongside the city, sharing in both joys and concerns, and contributing the teachings of the Gospel as a source of joy and hope for humanity. The mayor echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the historical role of the Church in León and its ongoing dedication to community welfare and heritage protection, rooted in the values of fraternity and charity.
