Saint Ignatius and the Courage to Defend the Faith
Saint Ignatius of Antioch was celebrated today as a bishop and martyr. According to the Gospel, Jesus stated, “Everyone who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever denies me before others, I will deny before my Father in heaven.” This reflection emphasizes the importance of openly declaring one's faith.
In Brazil, the Federal Constitution guarantees religious freedom, allowing individuals to identify as Christians or members of other denominations openly. However, during Saint Ignatius's time, he faced persecution for his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. He became a victim of Emperor Trajan’s relentless pursuit, as he refused to renounce his beliefs.
Saint Ignatius was imprisoned and transported to Rome in chains. There, he faced a gruesome fate in the Colosseum, where he was devoured by wild beasts during the emperor’s victory celebrations in Dacia. His journey to martyrdom began with immense suffering, culminating in his execution in the year 107.
The message emphasizes the need for dialogue in a religiously diverse nation while urging Catholics to maintain their identity in Christ. Believers are encouraged to not be ashamed of their faith and to witness for Jesus wherever they are. The blessing concludes with a call for divine grace from the Almighty God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
