Ministerpräsident Gordon Schnieder says he has God behind him
The Ministerpräsident of Rheinland-Pfalz, Gordon Schnieder, presents his favourite songs in the radio programme Meine Playlist. He stresses his responsibility as a Christian and as a Landesvater. He says the churches get his support. In an interview with DOMRADIO he answers questions about his music taste, his faith and his role. He says he can enjoy rock and pop music despite a full schedule. He says he uses music to unwind and to prepare for the next appointment. He says he lives two hours from Mainz and tries to return home often. He says he drives home in silence to reflect and to be present for his family. He says his children like to turn the music up when they are out.
He says the title Landesvater is not claimed by him. He says he is first a family man. He says the land is diverse with many dialects but all are Rheinland-Pfälzer and he is proud of that. He says his week runs from Monday morning to Sunday afternoon and that he has little free time. He says his faith has always been important and gives him strength in difficult political moments. He says he tries to bring Christian thoughts into decisions. He says he is convinced God is with him and helps him sometimes. He says humility before responsibility is felt every day because he sits at the same desk where Helmut Kohl and Bernhard Vogel once sat. He says he apologised for the failure to protect people during the Ahrtal flood and for the delayed response.
He says the flood showed a gap in state protection and he regrets that. He says the state promised security and that promise was not kept. He says people must decide whether to accept his apology. He says the apology is not about personal blame but about recognizing errors. He says the flood was caused by an intense low pressure system that dropped much rain on a region that cannot absorb heavy rain. He says the focus was on the Moselle and Rhine and not on the Ahrtal. He says the attention was missed at the time and only looked later.
