Pope Leo XIV Praises Vatican Women Workers as a Wealth to Be Recognized and Valued
Pope Leo XIV addressed Vatican employees, particularly women, during a meeting with Vatican worker associations on Monday, October 5, 2026, commending their dedication and spirit of service. He emphasized that their work contributes significantly to the pastoral ministry of the Successor of Peter. Speaking about the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and evolving labor markets, the Pope warned against losing sight of the irreplaceable centrality of the human person and the inalienable dignity of work. He stressed that work is not merely a tool but expresses and strengthens human dignity, serving as a path toward personal growth, societal progress, and the common good. The Pope highlighted that work fosters cooperation, supports families, and builds relationships through dialogue and mutual listening.
He noted that no one can achieve meaningful outcomes alone, and collective effort is essential. Addressing two Vatican worker associations, Leo XIV underscored the values of community and unity, which were central to the teachings of his predecessors on labor within the Vatican. He described all Vatican workers as part of an ecclesial community, united in faith and contributing to the universal mission entrusted by Jesus Christ to Saint Peter and his successors. The Pope called for professional responsibility, equal dignity, and diligence among all workers, emphasizing fidelity to assigned duties and zealous commitment to the Vatican's mission. He urged the associations to prioritize collaboration over conflict, referencing Saint John Paul II, and affirmed that dialogue remains the primary path for resolving workplace issues.
The Pope also linked dialogue to his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, describing it as integral to the Church's vocation and a key instrument for peaceful coexistence and conflict resolution. Turning to the Vatican Women's Association, the Pope praised women for bringing unique sensitivity, creativity, and practical wisdom to their roles. He stated that their presence enriches the workplace and enhances institutional life, urging greater recognition of their contributions. He concluded by expressing hope for a workplace culture where individuals are not exploited or marginalized, where mutual support prevails, and where each person's value and competence are acknowledged.
