Pope Leo XIV Calls for Conversion and Trust in God's Greater Plans

On Sunday 20 September 2026 Pope Leo XIV led the Angelus prayer in St Peter's Square before a gathered faithful community. He began with an address to believers, recalling the words of the Prophet Isaiah that God's thoughts are not human thoughts and God's ways are not human ways. The Pope emphasized that God's plans are infinitely greater and more humane than the schemes people devise as sinners. He urged the crowd to abandon crooked paths and return to the Lord, who is merciful and forgiving. During the liturgy the Pope reflected on the Gospel parable of the workers in the vineyard, noting that some labored all day while others worked only a short time, yet all received the same wage.

He explained that the landowner's instruction to pay the last workers first was intended to reveal God's goodness to all, not merely to a select few. The Pope warned that resentment could have been avoided, but the deliberate choice was made to make divine generosity visible to everyone. He highlighted that God's new ways challenge those who consider themselves first and entitled to what they have found. Instead, true joy, wisdom and a better future arise when love overrides accounting, when compassion lifts the worthy, and when the gift of peace ends enmity and draws people together in gratitude. Wherever God's new things appear there is no room for jealousy or division, the Pope said.

He called on brothers and sisters to become workers in God's vineyard, to labor for His justice and peace, and to seek the Lord while He may be found. The Pope concluded by inviting the faithful to look to the Blessed Virgin Mary, who, like all creatures, is spotless and helps us trust in God and surrender to His mercy so that His ways become ours and His thoughts become ours. After speaking these words the Pope recited the Angelus prayer with the community and imparted his apostolic blessing to all.
