Jesus Changes Perspective on Greatness
Jesus redefines greatness by inviting a child to illustrate true humility. He teaches that entering the kingdom of heaven requires becoming like a child, not merely seeking power or status. The Gospel of Matthew records the disciples asking who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven, and Jesus placing a child before them to demonstrate that the one who humbles himself like a child is the greatest.
He warns against despising any of these little ones, noting that their angels always see the face of God the Father. This passage emphasizes that greatness is measured by service to the vulnerable, not by social rank. The commentary reflects on how children held no social standing in Jesus' time, making their inclusion a radical call to humility. It calls for rejecting superiority and embracing the weak, as caring for them is equivalent to caring for Christ himself.
The text also references a broader spiritual reflection on faith as a dynamic reality that can both grow and err, urging believers to examine their associations and emotions in light of this teaching. A prayer concludes the reflection, asking for the grace to serve the little ones without condescension.
