GMS Resolves to Hold World Mission Conference in 2027
The General Assembly of Presbyterian Church in Korea Mission Society, known as GMS, has resolved to host a World Mission Conference in 2027. The decision was made during a seminar for executive directors, committee chairs, presbytery moderators, and secretaries held on November 3 at the Wolmun-ri Mission Headquarters.
The conference is scheduled to take place from June 30 to July 3 under the theme, Church, Go to the Nations Again. It will be hosted at Daejeon Joongang Church. GMS intends for the event to be a mission festival where missionaries, churches, and youth gather to move beyond a simple meeting toward actual sending and practice.
To prepare for the event, GMS will launch prayer teams and mission schools. The prayer teams will be led by 72 wives of GMS leaders, with each leader's wife expected to gather 100 prayer members, totaling 7,200 people. Additionally, GMS will appoint 20 regional committee chairs to establish regional mission schools. These schools will recruit and train individuals for at least three months to serve as short term missionaries, who will then be appointed and sent during the conference.
To facilitate these regional platforms, GMS modified its articles of association by integrating and revising sections regarding branches and regional boards into a new section for domestic regional committees. The specific organization of these committees will be decided by the executive committee following consultations with the GMS policy committee.
GMS expects approximately 3,000 participants to attend the conference. This estimate includes 1,000 people from 500 missionary families, 500 to 1,000 individuals including LMTC graduates and those interested in short term missions, 500 youth and students, and 500 members and pastors from sending churches. The event aims to provide recharge and direction for missionaries while establishing youth as primary agents of mission through programs and subsequent outreach activities. The organization plans to utilize a short term mission platform to connect 13,000 LMTC graduates to the field.
