# Zuppi returns from his mission in Russia, where he could speak with Ukrainian prisoners

The third mission to Moscow by Cardinal Matteo Zuppi concluded on September 30, following previous missions in June 2023 and October 2024. The special envoy of the Holy Father for humanitarian affairs and president of the Italian Episcopal Conference had traveled to Ukraine last July, where he also visited the camps of Russian soldiers in the Lviv region. Two days ago, the cardinal visited a detention camp for Ukrainian prisoners of war, where he spoke with them and conveyed a message of closeness from Pope Leo XIV, expressing hope that they may return home soon.

During these three days, the apostolic nuncio in Moscow, Archbishop Giovanni d’Aniello, accompanied the cardinal. Cardinal Zuppi also met with Yuri Ushakov, advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin on foreign policy matters. The discussions centered on the situation of military and civilian prisoners, the search for missing persons, family reunification, and issues related to the repatriation of minors.

The cardinal also met with the Russian representative for children's rights, Maria Lvova-Belova. "It is necessary," commented Zuppi, "to strengthen and accelerate the necessary verification to ensure family reunification."
