Maria Montserrat Alvarado has assumed the role of head of Vatican communications, becoming the first woman and the first American to lead the department. The appointment was made by Pope Leo XIV, who is also a United States citizen. Alvarado, who is 39 years old, took up her position on a Sunday. The Vatican does not use gendered titles, so her official designation is Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication. This marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Holy See's media apparatus, which has historically been led by Italian men.

Alvarado was born in Mexico and raised in the US state of Florida. She is a political scientist who completed a degree in political management with a focus on communication in Washington DC. Prior to this, she studied musical theater. She gained political experience in the US capital by advocating for the rights of religious communities, which often face challenges due to the strict separation of church and state in the United States.

Her media career began at the conservative Catholic media network EWTN, the Eternal Word Television Network. She moderated the weekly television program EWTN News in Depth and later rose to become the head of the network's extensive news division. This division includes the Catholic News Agency. According to insiders, Alvarado replaced a combative internal stance with a factual and informative tone on EWTN's news channels. She has not disclosed exactly how the Pope first noticed her or how he contacted her, but she indicated in a recent interview that the Pope personally initiated her appointment.

Her new portfolio encompasses several official and quasi-official channels, including the Vatican publishing house, the daily newspaper Osservatore Romano, the multilingual online platform Vatican News, and the Vatican press office. It is expected that she will determine the future personnel and structural arrangements for these entities. Alvarado has identified learning the language and mentality of the Italian-dominated environment as one of her current challenges. The Dicastery for Communication is responsible for the entire communication system of the Apostolic See, unifying all Holy See communication enterprises to respond to the needs of the Church's evangelization mission in a digital media environment.

The appointment follows a broader trend of American influence within the Vatican, as Pope Leo XIV is the first US-born pope. The Dicastery aims to ensure a unified response to the spread and development of digital media, convergence, and interactivity. Other recent Vatican appointments include new leadership positions in the Secretariat of the Synod, which works closely with the Curia but is not part of it. Additionally, Archbishop Hubertus van Megen, the Nuncio to Germany, is working to ease tensions between the Vatican and Germany, while Archbishop Christophe El Kassis, the Permanent Observer to the United Nations, has discussed the potential use of satellites in addressing global crises.
