# UNESCO Director Calls Pope Visit Strategic and Timely

The Vatican announced a papal visit that UNESCO Director Åsa Regnér described as strategically important and timely. She highlighted Pope Leo XIV's role as a key global figure amid rising challenges such as climate change, social inequality, armed conflict, and disregard for international law. Regnér noted the Pope's recent encyclical Magnifica Humanitas addresses artificial intelligence concerns relevant to humanity's dignity and autonomy.

Regnér emphasized UNESCO's collaboration with the Holy See to promote human dignity amid rapid technological advancement. She stated that while UNESCO provides information and identifies harmful processes, member states must enact regulations, with some adopting UNESCO frameworks and others not.

The director pointed out that certain technology companies now possess wealth and influence exceeding many nation-states. She argued these entities should face accountability for violations, though UNESCO's authority remains limited to guidance rather than enforcement.

Regnér affirmed that the United Nations remains the sole operational global organization capable of advancing a civilization of love championed by the Pope. She stressed the UN's unique position to address multifaceted crises including multilateralism fatigue, financial instability, and security council inefficiencies while delivering humanitarian aid across unprecedented numbers of member states.

When questioned about restoring peaceful dialogue, Regnér described the challenge as immense but expressed confidence in building inclusive discourse through private sector engagement, civil society participation, and fact-based discussions. She concluded that such collaborative meetings represent the essential path forward for addressing global issues.
