Pastor Matthijs Schuurman learned from former military personnel what to do when a disaster strikes. He had to assist injured individuals in a recreated subway and calm and distance shocked members of the public. After two days of training, Schuurman may now call himself a citizen reservist.

He was invited to undergo the training by the civil municipality, specifically due to his role as a pastor in the Hervormde Gemeente (PKN) in the village.

‘As a pastor, you are a familiar face in the village. People know you from weddings and funerals. Additionally, I know many stories and connections of people. It helps when such a trusted face engages in this.’
