The hbo-dominee is coming, but training programs are waiting for clarity.
The Protestant Church is facing uncertainty regarding the training of future pastors. Marchien Timmerman, from Hogeschool Windesheim, frequently receives inquiries from theology students about how they can work as predikant-pastor in the church. Her honest response is that the situation remains unclear.
Two years ago, the synod of the Protestant Church decided to open the role of predikant to individuals without a university degree. This decision was made in light of a growing shortage of pastors, as three out of ten congregations lack their own dominee. The church reached this agreement after five years of discussions on the topic, ending a long deliberation process.
Despite the decision to allow hbo-dominees, the required training programs for these new pastors have not yet been clearly defined. As a result, prospective candidates are still waiting for essential information to fully prepare for their roles within the Protestant Church. The slow progress of these educational frameworks has caused concern among students and church leaders alike.
