Pope Leão XIV is now in his room following the surgical procedure, with tests confirming the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma. The surgery was completed successfully, within the expected time and manner. The Holy Father is currently in his room. This information was released by the Press Office of the Holy See on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 13.

Leão XIV was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome that morning for the procedure, which was announced by the Pontiff during the Marian prayer of the Angelus last Sunday, October 11. In the thoracic surgery, to ensure the completeness of the intervention, the lower lobe of the right lung was removed using video-assisted technique. The intraoperative examination confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, as suspected in pre-operative tests.

The Holy Father remained in the operating room for about three hours, while the intervention lasted approximately 90 minutes. The surgery was successful and there were no complications. After the intervention, the Pope woke up normally and, after a brief observation period, returned to his room on the 10th floor.

The surgical team was coordinated by Prof. Stefano Margaritora, assisted by Prof. Elisa Meacci, Dr. Maria Teresa Congedo, and Dr. Leonardo Petracca Ciavarella.
