# Pope's Reflection on the Gospel for October 12, 2026

Pope Francis delivered a reflection on the Gospel for the 28th week in Ordinary Time, focusing on the ‘Jonah Syndrome.’ He emphasized that this syndrome lacks passion for repentance among people. The Pope described it as a pursuit of a ‘laundry-like’ holiness, which is beautifully adorned yet devoid of zeal to proclaim the Lord.

He promised a sign of Jonah to this generation afflicted by the ‘Jonah Syndrome.’ He connected Jonah's three days in the belly of the great fish to Jesus' death and resurrection. The Pope highlighted that the true sign of Jonah assures us of salvation through Christ's blood. He pointed out that many Christians mistakenly believe they can achieve salvation through their actions alone, while true salvation stems from responding to God's merciful love.

The sign of Jonah calls for humility and gentleness in following the Lord, recognizing that we are all sinners.
