# Pope Urges Panama Bishops to Support Vulnerable Populations

The Pope met with bishops from Panama on Friday, October 24, during their visit to the Holy See. During the meeting, the Pope instructed the bishops to build bridges, promote dialogue, and remain close to those who most need support.

The Pope expressed solidarity with communities affected by a violent earthquake that hit the country on October 9. He requested that his message of prayer and proximity be shared with the population, especially in the regions most severely impacted. He also thanked the people of Panama for their solidarity and acknowledged the work performed by Caritas and social aid programs for the victims.

In response to the earthquake damage, church structures in Panama provided resources through diocesan Caritas and social pastoral aid. José Domingo Ulloa, president of the Panamanian Episcopal Conference, stated that anonymous donors and companies used this national solidarity network for their donations.

During the visit, the bishops reaffirmed their commitment to protecting creation. They joined other Christian communities to celebrate the Day of Creation through the Eucharist and various awareness actions regarding the responsibility to preserve the common home.

Regarding migration, the Panamanian church is facing new challenges. While Panama has received migrants from South American countries including Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador, more families are now seeking to settle and build lives in Panama. This shift requires a renewal of migrant pastoral care to provide long term stability and integration rather than just immediate assistance.

Bishop Ulloa described the visit as a way to strengthen communion and receive advice for the specific challenges of Panamanian communities. He noted that meetings with various dicasteries of the Holy See showed a willingness to support the needs of particular churches.
