# Pope Leo XIV Urges Unity During Pontifical Teutonic College Anniversary

Pope Leo XIV addressed the community of the Pontifical Teutonic College of Campo Santo on Saturday to mark the 150th anniversary of its founding.

The Pope stated that a single faith in Christ is the principle of unity among believers. He noted that the Lord prayed for his disciples to be one, and described such unity as a necessary element for the credibility of the testimony of the church.

Regarding the history of the site, the Pope recalled that Campo Santo was a special location for pilgrims coming to Rome from territories of the Roman Empire since the eighth century. During the nineteenth century, the location became significant for priests from countries where policies of cultural struggle in the German Empire created obstacles or made apostolic service impossible. Through the hospitality of the brotherhood of Campo Santo Teutonico, the site served as a place of study and refuge for priests from German speaking regions.

The Pope further noted that Campo Santo later evolved into an important center for research on Christian origins, church history, and Christian archaeology.

In terms of current utility, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that the college continues to serve as a safe place for the training of priests. He explained that this allows priests to deepen their spiritual and intellectual journeys so they can answer the questions of people in their countries while facing the major challenges of the current era.

The Pope highlighted the unique location of the institution near the tomb of Saint Peter. He stated that this proximity has been accompanied by loyalty to the Roman Pontiff since the beginning of the institution. This is reflected in the title of Pontifical College, which was granted to the institution by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.

Finally, the Pope stated that the honor of the title includes a commitment to maintain closeness and unity with the successor of Peter and the faith of the apostles. He urged the members of the college to make the prayer of Jesus their own and to seek the gift of making the community a place where unity is truly lived and shown.
