# Pope Leo XIV to Undergo Lung Nodule Surgery

Pope Leo XIV announced on October 11, following the Sunday Angelus prayer, that he is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove a lung nodule. The Pope explained to the numerous faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square, "During recent examinations, medical personnel discovered a nodule in my lung. The nodule was found at a very early stage, and its location has been precisely confirmed." The Pope continued, "The medical team deemed it appropriate to remove it through surgery, and based on their recommendation, I have decided to proceed with the operation." The surgery is expected to take place in the coming days at Policlinico Gemelli Hospital.

In expressing gratitude for the spiritual solidarity shown by those gathered in the square and around the world, the Pope stated, "I entrust myself to your prayers! Have a blessed Sunday!" In response to reporters' questions, Matteo Bruni, director of the Holy See Press Office, stated, "The surgery is scheduled for early next week," adding that the anticipated hospitalization period is about one week.

Following the announcement of the surgery, the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) conveyed a message of solidarity. Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the president, noted that church communities across Italy would remember the Pope during liturgical celebrations and prayer times. He expressed, "We are grateful for the humility and trust that Pope Leo has shared with us during this trial. Your Holiness, you are never alone!"

The Italian government and major institutions also expressed their support. President Sergio Mattarella conveyed the affectionate sentiments of the nation in a message to Pope Leo XIV. He stated, "Your Holiness can expect warm concern and solidarity not only from Catholics but also from many people in Italy and around the world, including believers and non-believers." Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed comfort in the Pope's "calmness and composure" when announcing the surgery. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops also sent a message of support through Archbishop Paul Stagg Coakley, who prayed for the Holy Spirit to guide the hands of the medical team performing the surgery. He requested the faithful to pray for the Pope and the medical staff involved in the operation.
