Pope Leo XIV shows steady recovery after lung tumor surgery, doctors confirm
Pope Leo XIV is recovering steadily after surgery for a lung tumor, with blood tests and a chest X-ray confirming what his doctors described as a constant improvement in his general condition on October 16, 2026.
The pope underwent the operation on October 13, 2026, at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, where he was admitted earlier that day. Routine examinations passed on October 15, and doctors noted a good recovery of the operated lung.
During his hospitalization, Pope Leo XIV resumed some activities. On October 18, he appeared at the Angelus, smiling and joyful, telling the crowd that he would gradually resume his duties with the help of God and the prayers of the faithful.
His personal physician, Professor Stefano Margaritora, said on October 17 that the pope is expected to be fully recovered within ten days and may travel to South America in November.
While at Gemelli Hospital, the pope spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 16, the Holy See confirmed.
The pope has been under the care of a dedicated medical team during his stay at Gemelli, as well as at the Vatican and during his travels.
The news of the surgery surprised many, including Catholic dignitaries and heads of state, though reactions did not amount to alarm.
In a separate development, the Diocese of Sion announced that marriage preparation and catechumenate programs will now carry fees, citing rising administrative and logistical costs due to increased participation.
The Catholic Church also marked the centenary of the World Day of Prayer for Missionary Sunday in 2026, an initiative established by Pope Pius XI in 1926 to signal the end of colonial missions and the rise of local churches worldwide.
