Pope Leo XIV Selects Theme for 2027 World Day of the Sick
Pope Leo XIV has chosen the theme for the thirty-fifth World Day of the Sick, which will be observed on February 11, 2027. The selected topic focuses on the role of the community in caring for every human being, specifically referencing the biblical account of friends lowering a paralyzed man before Jesus. This announcement was made by the Dicastery for Integral Human Development in a statement released on Thursday, November 5, 2026.
The theme draws inspiration from the Gospel according to Luke, which narrates how a group of people brought a paralyzed individual to Jesus. Due to the large crowd preventing access, these individuals lowered the man through the roof to ensure he could receive healing. The official statement highlights that this action demonstrates how community members work together to bring those suffering to sources of physical and spiritual relief.
The message calls upon every Christian community and society to unite in attention to the weakness and sorrow of others. It emphasizes that the commandment to love one's neighbor lies at the heart of the baptismal vocation. Parishes and Christian groups are urged to take responsibility for caring for lonely people, the elderly, and those enduring suffering, much like the friends of the paralyzed man. These communities are encouraged to become places of closeness and hope for those in need.
