# Pope Leo XIV Addresses Conference on the Future of Artificial Intelligence

Pope Leo XIV delivered a greeting to participants of a conference titled The Future of AI: Dialogue between the Vatican and the Scientific Community on the Development and Application of Intelligent Technologies. The event took place on October 30, 2026, in the Hall of the College of Cardinals in the Vatican. The meeting was organized by the Pontifical Academy for Life and the Future of Life Institute.

Pope Leo XIV stated that the future of artificial intelligence is not predetermined and depends on human choices. He argued that humans have the responsibility to guide, change, or reject the application of these technologies. He emphasized that the central question should be what purpose artificial intelligence should serve rather than what it is capable of doing. He cautioned that viewing development as a competition may lead to neglecting those who are left behind.

Regarding the nature of the technology, the Pope asserted that machines are tools and not persons. He noted that artificial intelligence does not possess a body, experience life, feel joy or sadness, or understand the internal meaning of love, labor, friendship, and responsibility. He warned that granting rights or legal personality to such systems could blur human responsibility and abandon those harmed by faceless entities.

Pope Leo XIV insisted that certain decisions must never be delegated to artificial intelligence. He specifically mentioned the risks of reducing individuals to data points in target lists or border control databases. He stated that decisions affecting human life, freedom, and the use of force must remain under the supervision of responsible humans. He called for the disarmament of artificial intelligence and urged nations meeting in Geneva in November to take concrete steps to ban lethal autonomous weapons.

On the issue of social equity, the Pope called for directing intelligent technologies toward the common good. He argued that the benefits of innovation, including knowledge and tools, must be distributed equally to the most needy and should not serve only a privileged few. He advocated for the promotion of solidarity and participation across various levels of international society.

Finally, Pope Leo XIV highlighted the urgent need for effective international institutions to put ethical principles into practice. He stated that protecting the global common good requires mechanisms with common standards, independent monitoring, and clear accountability. Such systems would ensure that decisions regarding the development and use of artificial intelligence are verifiable, contestable, and accompanied by appropriate remedies if harm occurs.
