# Pope calls for renewed ecumenical unity among Lutherans

Pope Francis expressed satisfaction with the growing maturity of Lutheran Catholic relations over recent decades. He highlighted the Augsburg Confession as a milestone in ecumenical dialogue and referenced previous joint documents such as "Eucharist", "Service in the Church" and "Path to Communion". The Pope quoted his predecessor, stating that ecumenism is not merely diplomatic maneuvering but a path of grace rooted in divine grace.

He emphasized that shared faith, sacraments and ministry constitute the true aim of this journey. The 500th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession in 2030 was presented as a significant opportunity for joint celebration. The Pope recalled that the original confession sought to affirm a faith within the universal, holy and apostolic Church and was intended for internal reconciliation.

He urged believers and theologians to focus on Christ and the Gospel, to return with reverence to common roots and to rediscover the apostolic heritage that unites Christians as brothers and sisters.
