# Pope appeals for dialogue and concrete peace initiatives in Ukraine

Pope Leo XIV appealed on Sunday to those responsible for the ongoing war in Ukraine for "a greater willingness to engage in dialogue and initiate new concrete peace measures." While speaking during his Angelus prayer at St. Peter's Square, he highlighted an extraordinary effort that followed diplomatic endeavors, leading to the evacuation of hundreds of civilians this week from the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Olesjkyj under an unusual humanitarian ceasefire. "In recent days, a humanitarian operation has been conducted to assist the civilian population in the city of Olesjkyj," he stated, adding, "I hope that the cooperation between the parties that made this necessary humanitarian action possible will promote a greater willingness for dialogue and lead to new concrete peace initiatives." He also entrusted all people around the world suffering due to war to the Virgin Mary, "Queen of Peace and Queen of All Saints." The extraordinary humanitarian effort followed diplomatic attempts involving Pope Leo XIV and Melania Trump.

She helped facilitate the agreement, while Pope Leo XIV personally appealed to the Russian leader to allow humanitarian aid and civilian evacuation. Along with the evacuations, vital supplies such as food, drinking water, and medical necessities were delivered to residents who remained in Olesjkyj.

The exact number of evacuees has not been disclosed for security reasons, but Melania Trump indicated that more than 750 individuals could be evacuated.
