# Over 1,600 attend Jordanian evangelistic service led by Michael Youssef

More than 1,600 people attended an evangelistic service on September 4 at the Jordan Evangelical Theological Seminary campus in the Amman suburbs. The event featured preaching by American-Egyptian pastor Michael Youssef. Hundreds of attendees reportedly responded to an invitation to convert to the Christian faith.

The service, themed "Christ Our Hope," was organized and live-broadcast by Al Malakoot Sat TV, an Arabic-language satellite channel founded by Youssef. The JETS president, Imad Shehadeh, introduced Youssef by citing his spiritual life, long experience, and theological studies in Australia and America as equipping him to spread the Gospel through ministry, television, radio, and writing. Shehadeh noted the theme paraphrases a Greek inscription on the seminary's prayer tower, "Christ in you, the hope of glory." The seminary, founded in 1991, had previously invited Youssef for a similar gathering twelve years earlier.

Youssef preached on personal choices using the biblical story of the rich young man seeking eternal life. According to the website of Leading the Way, a ministry where Youssef serves as executive president, more than 500 people converted during the event. Organizers also distributed 400 free copies of the New Testament to the crowd.

Youssef, who founded The Apostles Church in Atlanta in 1987 and served as its lead pastor for 39 years, recently redirected part of his ministry toward the Middle East. He told Christian Daily on September 3 that his son Jonathan encouraged him to evangelize the Arab world, stating he wanted to begin with Jordan. Al Malakoot Sat TV director Farid Garas announced two upcoming "Christ Our Hope" events in Egypt: one in Luxor on November 6 and another in Mokattam on November 15.

In a related development, Jordanian senator Michael Nazzal visited the Jordanian Evangelical Council as a gesture of rapprochement. Evangelicals had previously been excluded from a meeting between parliamentarians and other Christian leaders. Separately, the owners of the Basimta Messianic Jewish cafe in Jordan decided to close on the Sabbath after weeks of protests, though they expressed joy at having been able to speak about their faith.
