# October 7 Liturgical Readings Commemorate Our Lady of the Rosary

The liturgical memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary is observed on October 7, commemorating the Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary. This feast traces its origins to the victory at the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571, which halted the expansion of the Ottoman Empire. Pope Pius V instituted the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Victory to give thanks for that triumph, and the Rosary was prayed before and during the battle. In 1573, Pope Gregory XIII named the feast the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary and placed it on the first Sunday of October, since the victory occurred on a Sunday when the People of God prayed the Rosary.

In 1913, Pope Pius X restored the celebration to its historical date of October 7. The Rosary itself was established in 1214 by Saint Dominic, inspired by the Virgin Mary, who appeared to him holding the Rosary and promised that this prayer would lead to victory. The call to pray the Rosary daily was renewed in later apparitions of the Virgin, including her words at Fátima: She is the Queen of the Rosary and urged the faithful to pray the Rosary every day. The first reading for today comes from the Acts of the Apostles, describing the Apostles returning to Jerusalem after the Ascension of Jesus and remaining in prayer with the disciples, including Mary, the Mother of Jesus.

The Gospel reading is from Luke, recounting the Annunciation, when the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would bear the Son of God. Mary's role as Mother of the Church is highlighted, showing her presence in prayer with the early disciples as they awaited the Holy Spirit. Her faith and obedience serve as a model for the Church, calling all believers to trust in God's will even when its meaning is unclear.
