# German church community operates local post office branch

The Protestant church community in Frohnhausen, located in central Hesse, operates a post office branch within its family center. This initiative began after the local post office closed in 2025. The facility, known as Central 15, serves as a hub for postal services and community activities, with the church managing the branch for over a year.

The building houses a postal counter where staff scan, bill, and dispatch packages. A large postal truck is typically present in the driveway for loading and unloading. The branch is open six days a week for two hours each day. It operates from 10:00 to 12:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and from 16:00 to 18:00 on Tuesdays. These hours are designed to accommodate working residents. The church aims to bring people together by combining postal services with a welcoming environment that includes tables, chairs, coffee, cookies, and a play area for children.

Financial support for the project comes from multiple sources. The regional welfare association covered the 80,000 euro renovation costs for the approximately 250 square meter building. The church pays rent and generates daily income from the post office. It also rents part of the building for celebrations. The Job Center covers two-thirds of the salary costs for the post office employee, who was placed by the regional Diakonia integration service. Church educators and secretaries also assist in the operation.

In the afternoons, the building serves as a meeting place for children. Approximately 20 children aged six to twelve attend twice a week for supervised play, crafts, and baking. A retired local teacher provides regular homework help. The facility also hosts family counseling services. The church board had been searching for space to offer programs for school-aged children before the post office closed. The closure allowed the community to combine postal services with open children's work in the same location.

The church views this work as part of its role in the local community. It operates a cafe and seeks to create relationships through concrete offers. The church board chair stated that the community's mission is to bring the gospel to people in a practical way. The post office counter creates contact opportunities for people of different religions and social backgrounds who might not otherwise visit a church institution.
