# Evangelical Church establishes first church funeral home in Germany

The Evangelical Church has opened the first church funeral home in Germany, named Libera, in Heidelberg. Beate Großklaus, a partner in the venture, explains how the services offered differ from traditional funeral homes.

Clergy in Germany, whether Evangelical or Catholic, are facing increased demands from growing congregations and administrative tasks. In light of this, the church's new initiative aims to address the need for support in the funeral process.

Großklaus highlights that funerals are crucial moments where clergy can provide essential support to families. The church’s role is to assist individuals in significant life transitions, particularly in the process of saying goodbye and letting go.

"We have special ritual and hope expertise," she says, emphasizing that the church can empower individuals from various backgrounds to navigate their grief in a meaningful way.

The church also seeks to contribute to society's understanding of death and the treatment of the deceased. Großklaus notes that rituals surrounding death are fundamental to humanity, witnessing an early origin of religion.

Practically, the funeral home employs an experienced funeral director to ensure quality service, while also prioritizing the personal involvement of families in the care of their loved ones. Families are invited to participate in the preparation of the deceased, which can include having the body at home for a final farewell, although alternative spaces are also provided for this purpose.

Großklaus explains that the approach of Libera represents a distinct church perspective on funerals, combining traditional funeral services with a church ethos. "We aim to accompany individuals from the cradle to the grave," she states, indicating a holistic approach to care in these sensitive moments.

The involvement of relatives in the funeral process is emphasized as a deeply spiritual experience. Großklaus shares an example illustrating the significance of personal engagement in the mourning process, highlighting that such moments can be crucial for families.

The name "Libera" also resonates with the idea of letting go, which is reflected in a specific prayer used in their services. The church welcomes individuals from all faiths and backgrounds, ensuring that personal or non-Christian rituals can also find a place within their framework.
