Eucharist living brings the kingdom, says commentary
The kingdom comes when believers live the Eucharist, according to a commentary. This is the essence of watchfulness. This is the task assigned to each of Christ's disciples. However, the time of waiting for Him is demanding. One may experience enthusiasm, but also fatigue, zeal, and impatience with the long wait. The Gospel for today, October 20, 2026, says, Let your loins be girded, and your lamps burning. And you yourselves like men waiting for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks, they may open to him immediately.
Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he comes shall find watching. Verily I say to you, he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. The commentary on the Gospel says, The words about 'girded loins' and 'burning lamps' are a call to all generations of believers. Luke writes this to a community that experiences enthusiasm, but also fatigue, zeal, and impatience with the long wait. The commentary also says, Saint Luke describes the reality of the life of a disciple of Christ on three eschatological levels.
The first is the past, when humanity waited for the coming of the Savior. Jesus came. The kingdom came in Him. The second level is the future. The world will have its end, and the kingdom will triumph at the end of time. The third level is the present. The world has been saved. The kingdom comes when believers live the Eucharist. This is the essence of watchfulness. This is the task assigned to each of Christ's disciples.
