Court Prohibits Shincheonji Demonstrations Disrupting Worship
A court has intervened to prohibit demonstrations and gatherings by Shincheonji that disrupt church worship. The Daejeon District Court's 21st Civil Division issued a partial ruling on September 17 regarding a request for an injunction against Shincheonji's activities by Daejeon Doan Church. However, the court initially dismissed claims for indirect coercion.
Shincheonji's Matthia Tribe had reportedly held gatherings and demonstrations every Sunday for over eight weeks in front of Daejeon Doan Church, causing significant disruption to worship activities. Noise levels recorded reached as high as 100.8 decibels, which severely impacted the congregation's ability to worship. In response, Daejeon Doan Church filed the injunction, stating that the noise from Shincheonji interfered with their worship and religious activities.
The court ruled that Shincheonji's Matthia Tribe must not hold gatherings or demonstrations within 50 meters of the church building from 9:10 AM to 11:00 AM and from 11:10 AM to 1:00 PM on Sundays, or allow a third party to do so.
The court clarified that while the constitution guarantees freedom of speech, publication, assembly, and association, these freedoms are not absolute and must not infringe on the rights, reputation, or public morals of others. This ruling affirms that the freedom of religious activity is also a fundamental right deserving protection.
