# Community Celebrates 800th Death Anniversary of Patron Saint

A small community in Köln-Bilderstöckchen is set to celebrate the 800th death anniversary of its patron saint, with an orchestra, a world premiere, and gatherings. The event emphasizes the values of community and service over traditional religious practices.

Saint Francis of Assisi, who passed away on the evening of October 3, 1226, is recognized for his radical poverty, love for faith and humanity, and his "Canticle of the Sun," sung by children in choirs today. He renounced his wealthy upbringing to live among the poor and outcast, founding the Franciscan Order and becoming the patron saint of the poor, the blind, and social workers.

The community in Bilderstöckchen embraces the teachings of Saint Francis deeply. Agnes Pick, a key community member, noted that the patronage festival will reflect the usual spirit of the community, rooted in the values of Saint Francis. She explained that the saint valued the poor over grand celebrations, making him particularly relevant to the community's diverse socioeconomic background.

The festivities are designed to be inclusive, with a principle that ensures everyone can partake, regardless of their financial situation. Donations will be discreetly collected at the door, and previous events have successfully covered costs without leaving any expenses unpaid.

Pick stated that faith is expressed through actions rather than words, such as sharing a cup of coffee, a bowl of soup, or a simple encounter. The community welcomes everyone, regardless of their beliefs, emphasizing that attendance at mass is not obligatory.

For children, special activities are planned, including a children's church during the mass and a performance of "Laudato Si," a song inspired by the Canticle of Saint Francis. Pick hopes for joyful faces and meaningful interactions among attendees.

The festive service will take place on Sunday, October 4, at 11 AM, featuring clergy members and the first performance of "Missa brevis" by Rudolf Förster, conducted by Agnes Lipka, alongside the choir and orchestra.
