# Church in Ngong, Kenya, faces challenges and embraces social mission

A church in Ngong, located south of Nairobi, is addressing numerous social challenges while remaining committed to its mission. The Diocese of Ngong covers approximately 39,000 square kilometers and serves a population of 2.2 million, with Catholics making up about 15 percent of the community. Bishop Oballa Owaa emphasizes the rapid changes in the region, including urban expansion encroaching on traditional Maasai grazing lands and economic instability due to climate change affecting livestock farming.

The church is actively involved in various initiatives, including educational programs and health services, aimed at supporting livelihoods. The bishop highlights significant issues such as inequality, corruption, and poverty, which heavily affect the youth. He notes that the youth are not just citizens and Christians of tomorrow but are also integral to the church today.

Bishop Owaa points out a rising number of vocations, stating, "Our seminaries are full, really full." While he views this as a positive development, he acknowledges the responsibility to provide solid formation for future priests. However, many young individuals remain unemployed and vulnerable to exploitation in political campaigns. The bishop expresses concern over the plight of youth unable to pursue careers or fulfill their vocations due to a lack of necessary resources.

In response, the diocese operates 11 centers assisting street children, orphans, and girls at risk of early marriage. These centers offer support and a chance for renewal. "Without such places, many children would have no opportunities," the bishop notes. The diocese also provides food, financial assistance, and psychological support to those in need. Bishop Owaa asserts that the church must engage with social injustices, stating, "The church must get its hands dirty for the good of our brothers and sisters, out of love for God and in response to the real problems of people." He reiterates the importance of being present in the midst of suffering.
