# Christian bookstore opens in Orange despite declining book sales

The Christian bookstore L’Espérance was inaugurated on October 8 at 22, rue Caristie, opposite the town hall of Orange. Open since July 2026, it is one of only two Christian bookstores listed in the department. While the bookstore Clément VI in Avignon specializes in Catholic and Orthodox works, L’Espérance stands out for its evangelical orientation.

Virginie Cazajus, president of the association and main bookseller, explains that the project was born from a spiritual call. "During a meditation at home, I received in a certain way from the Lord, the call to open a place of sharing in Orange, a sort of Christian café," she recounts. "I was certain that it was necessary to open a place where everyone could come and approach God through this means," she adds.

The town hall of Orange welcomed the opening of the bookstore in a message posted on its Facebook account, wishing "a great success to L’Espérance!"

A bookstore designed as a living space

The project, independent of any particular church, has mobilized about twenty volunteers. The bookstore offers Bibles, theological works, testimonies, and books for youth. Biblical readings, screenings followed by debates, and workshops are also planned to bring life to the space.

The bookstore, an association governed by the 1901 law, finances its activities through donations and book sales with the support of the CLC bookstore network, which has lent it books. In the long term, it hopes to finance a bookseller position.

This opening occurs in a challenging context for independent bookstores, as highlighted by a survey published on July 9, 2026. Virginie Cazajus remains confident: "I do not anticipate much, I trust the Almighty God who placed this project in my heart and which has materialized in a few months."
