# Catholic Daily Readings for Sunday, October 4, 2026

The Catholic liturgical readings for Sunday, October 4, 2026, feature texts focusing on the themes of fruitfulness and the Kingdom of God.

One reading describes a vineyard belonging to the Lord of hosts, which represents the people of Israel. The text details how the owner prepared the land by removing stones and planting choice vines, building a watchtower and a winepress. Despite these efforts, the vineyard produced sour grapes instead of good ones. As a result, the owner declares he will remove the hedges and walls, allowing the land to be overrun by thorns and weeds and denying it rain.

In a separate passage from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians, believers are encouraged not to worry but to express their needs to God through prayer and thanksgiving. The text urges the faithful to focus on things that are true, honorable, just, holy, lovely, and commendable, while following the examples they have learned and seen.

An excerpt from the Gospel of Matthew records a parable told by Jesus to the chief priests and elders of the Jewish people. The story describes a landowner who planted a vineyard and leased it to tenants before traveling to another country. When the owner sent servants to collect his share of the harvest, the tenants beat, killed, or stoned them. Even after the owner sent his son, the tenants killed him to seize his inheritance.

When asked what the landowner would do, the chief priests and elders replied that he would destroy the wicked tenants and lease the vineyard to others. Jesus responded by citing scripture regarding the stone rejected by the builders becoming the cornerstone, stating that the Kingdom of God would be taken from them and given to a nation that would produce its fruit.
