# Cardinal Reina Calls for Strengthening Bond Between Pope and Dioceses

Cardinal Reina of Rome spoke during the Vatican’s synodal meeting on September 18 2026. He said the gathering will begin with a prayer led by the cardinal and will include three testimonies before Pope Leo’s address. The testimonies will feature a family a youth and a Caritas worker. Reina referenced last year’s annual assembly where he urged dioceses to grow in synodality unity and missionary spirit. He said progress has been made but must be strengthened. He highlighted efforts to build networks among nearby parishes to share experiences and support trained pastoral work. The cardinal noted the provincial vocation committee has been reinforced while advisory bodies remain unchanged.

He identified key challenges facing Roman parishes including broken families and youth substance abuse. He also pointed to poverty that extends beyond food insecurity to include loneliness unemployment and lack of shelter. Reina said housing shortages and rising rents have pushed average wages beyond reach especially for households with a single earner. He observed that the message of Christianity struggles to connect with daily life and that the Church seeks to place Christ at the center of personal existence as Pope Leo urged last year. The cardinal looks toward the 2033 Jubilee of Freedom as a guiding horizon. He described Rome’s diocese as both wealthy and complex and noted most churches lie in the city centre while most people live in outer neighborhoods.

Reina urged priests to pay special attention to those who no longer attend parish communities. He said the Church must reach beyond its walls as Christ commanded all to be welcomed. He called this outreach practical and essential. The cardinal praised youth participation in last year’s jubilee as a sign of hope to be nurtured. He concluded that the city needs God’s abundance and that the faithful must expend their strength and ability in service.
