# Cardinal Grech discusses future of Synodality after World Synod implementation

Cardinal Grech addressed the future of Synodality following the conclusion of the World Synod. He emphasized that the universal church assembly planned for 2028 aims to evaluate experiences and facilitate exchanges among participants.

The gathering, expected to host several hundred bishops, priests, and laypeople from all continents, is part of a three-year implementation phase deriving from the final document of the World Synod. Grech noted that during these years, various phases will support local churches, dioceses, and continental assemblies in preparation for the church assembly in 2028.

Grech clarified that the 2028 meeting is not a continuation of the Synod but rather a distinct occasion for evaluation and sharing gifts among the churches. He remarked that the future development of these gatherings must be determined by the Holy Father.

In Germany, there remains uncertainty regarding a Synodal Conference originally scheduled for November, which was intended to continue the Synodal Path. Grech acknowledged the ongoing inquiries related to this conference but stated that it is outside his jurisdiction, suggesting that the Dicastery for Bishops is responsible for these matters.

At a recent international symposium in Austria, around 180 representatives from over 30 European countries developed a spiritual and structural roadmap for Synodality in Europe. Grech mentioned that positive synodal experiences are already present at the grassroots level and that the upcoming meeting in 2028 would be an opportunity to exchange these experiences and learn from one another.

He stressed the importance of the synodal spirit, where the people of God feel they are part of the church, and emphasized the necessity of prayerful collaboration to discern the message of the Holy Spirit.

Grech also participated in a congress focused on polarization and reconciliation, addressing the disconnect between Rome and German reformers. He highlighted that the church is inherently synodal, meaning there is room for everyone, yet it also maintains a hierarchical structure led by bishops and bishops' conferences.

He concluded by stating that listening to one another can help reduce polarization and that through grace, a common solution may emerge. The implementation phase of the World Synod is set to unfold in five stages following the assembly held in Rome, which concluded on October 26, 2024.
