# Bistum Rottenburg to strengthen partnership with Burundi

The Bistum Rottenburg announced plans to expand its partnership with the church in Burundi, a country identified as one of the poorest in the world. Following project visits in Burundi, Bishop Klaus Krämer outlined further aid projects, particularly in the areas of health care and education. On Monday, he stated in Stuttgart, "We will not be able to solve Burundi's major problems alone. But we can listen, maintain reliable relationships, and together achieve concrete improvements."

Burundi, marked by civil war, poverty, and ethnic conflict, has been a partner country for the Bistum Rottenburg for a long time. From September 2 to 9, Bishop Krämer visited several church-supported projects and inaugurated a new center for peace and reconciliation work. His visit to a treatment center for HIV/AIDS patients highlighted the difficulties in health care access, with a nationwide shortage of medical practices, clinics, and medical supplies. The Bistum Rottenburg announced plans to assess engagement in health care alongside local partners.

Historically, Catholicism became the majority religion in Burundi under the rule of former colonial powers, Germany and Belgium. Today, approximately two-thirds of the estimated 11.5 million Burundians are Catholic, alongside 5 to 10 percent who are Protestant, including many Anglicans and a growing number of Pentecostal churches influenced by the United States. There is also a significant urban Muslim minority and around 20 percent of the population adheres to African traditional religions.
