# Arrest made in planned church attack

A federal prosecutor has detained an Iraqi national in the Brandenburg district of Barnim. He is under urgent suspicion of attempting to establish a terrorist association.

Additionally, the man is accused of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state and violating weapon laws.

According to the federal prosecutor, the suspect allegedly shares the radical Islamist ideology of the terrorist organization "Islamic State". In spring 2025, he reportedly planned attacks in Germany with other individuals against people he considered infidels. For this purpose, he is said to have acquired a firearm and scouted a church in Bremen, which was intended to be the group's first target.

Investigations indicate that the accused managed to recruit another person for his plans, but attempts to recruit further individuals reportedly failed.

Officials from the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Federal Police arrested the man on Thursday, September 17, based on an arrest warrant issued by the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice on September 8. He was subsequently presented to the investigating judge, who informed him of the arrest warrant and ordered pre-trial detention.
