# Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela signs agreement to study conversion of rectories into emergency housing

The Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela, the Diocesan Caritas, and the Official College of Architects of Galicia have signed an agreement to study the transformation of rectory houses into emergency housing. This initiative aims to address the growing difficulty many people and families face in accessing dignified housing. The project is led by the Archbishop of Santiago, Monsignor Francisco José Prieto Fernández, who seeks to put available resources at the service of vulnerable persons. The agreement represents a concrete commitment to Christian values by addressing human suffering through practical action. The initiative involves analyzing the potential of approximately 800 rectory houses existing in the archdiocese. The goal is to identify buildings that can be rehabilitated for temporary accommodation and social inclusion programs. Not all buildings will meet the necessary conditions, and their recovery will face economic and technical difficulties.

The project includes developing a master plan, updating the inventory of rectory houses, and studying the conservation status of the buildings. It will also assess habitability conditions, accessibility, and the works needed to adapt them as dwellings, as well as the legal possibilities for their rehabilitation. The Diocesan Caritas contributes its experience in attending to vulnerable persons and in social inclusion processes. The collaboration between the Archdiocese, Caritas, and the architects' college combines generosity with technical planning and human accompaniment. This approach aligns with the Church's social doctrine, which emphasizes the universal destination of goods and the social responsibility of private property. The initiative does not replace the responsibility of public administrations in housing matters. Instead, it seeks to contribute to a shared response through collaboration between religious institutions, professionals, and public bodies.

The success of this proposal will be measured by its results, including rehabilitated buildings, enabled dwellings, and persons who find an opportunity to move forward. The agreement constitutes a first step, with the true achievement being the conversion of these spaces into real homes and stories of hope. The initiative may inspire other dioceses and religious congregations to study whether their underutilized properties can serve persons in need. The project demonstrates that church heritage can become an instrument for the common good when it contributes to alleviating suffering and restoring dignity to those in difficult situations.
