The Christian Press announced that Amazon Bible House contributed 9350 JPY on October 18 2026. The donation supports the translation of John Milbank's Theology and Social Theory into Japanese. The work originally published in 1990 and revised in 2008 is regarded as a landmark in contemporary theology. It launched the radical orthodoxy movement centered at Cambridge University. The book examines the relationship between Christianity and the modern world. Modernity is defined as an era dominated by secular rationality. Thinkers such as Machiavelli Hobbes Adam Smith Durkheim and Weber described modernity as a domain where secular reason governs politics economics and society.

Milbank critiques this framework. He argues that secular rationality emerged from a theological problem not from external forces. He views Protestantism as having contributed to the construction of the modern world and believes that true Catholicism must overcome its legacy. He also analyzes post modern thought and identifies nihilism as a risk when difference ethics aligns with agonistic politics. He warns that fascist tendencies can arise from such alignments. Milbank proposes an alternative vision rooted in Augustine. He suggests that the Christian meta narrative can transcend secular rationality.

The book received praise in Time magazine in December 2001 describing it as an intellectual innovation that restores theologians to academic prominence. The translation effort required significant labor from translator Kenziro Harada. The publisher encourages readers to welcome the Japanese edition.
